Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician

Purpose

Manpower is seeking to recruit a Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician to join our client's team.

The Purpose of the Grade of Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician is to carry out electronic & pneumatic maintenance, repair and overhaul works as assigned by the Principal Officer in the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Workshop on Instrumentation and Control Systems as well as basic electrical maintenance and repair work on low voltage systems. The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician may be assigned on work related to his job description on any plant operated by the company, other plant owners as well as any related sub-contracted work from third parties in line with the principles as outlined in the collective agreement or performance agreement. The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician shall at all times perform his/her work in accordance and in compliance with Health and Safety Legislation as well as Health & Safety policies as may be issued by the Company from time to time.

Roles & Responsibilities

Technical Duties

  • Modify present manually operated systems to Automated Electronic loop control systems to reduce downtime and operator intervention, thus increasing efficiency;
  • Manufacture and integration of replacement Electronic equipment for both obsolete and present Electronic Instruments;
  • Maintenance data collection, analysis and organisation of maintenance programs of Electronic Emissions Monitoring Equipment.

Planning & Design

The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician shall support the Principal Officer in the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Workshop / Engineer in planning his work and be responsible for executing his own work whilst ensuring that this conforms to the specifications outlined by the Principal Officer in the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Workshop or Engineer. More specifically, the Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician shall provide support to:

  • Develop or revise in conjunction with the Engineer/Principal Officer in the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Workshop preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for Principal equipment and systems;
  • Develop/reviews preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for the testing of workshop equipment;
  • Prepare schematic drawings, sketches and reports, to reflect changes or alterations made to instruments, circuits and systems;
  • Recommend changes in circuitry or installation specifications to simplify assembly or maintenance;
  • Follows and provide assistance as required to develop a set of work instructions and procedures in connection with the task so assigned by the Engineer/ Principal Officer in the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Workshop; and procedures for the testing of workshop equipment;
  • Maintains Principal Service Manuals including circuits updating and workshop upkeep;
  • Identifying and determining required equipment, materials and method to be used on each specific electronic maintenance and repair job.

Fault Identification, Corrective Maintenance, Testing and Inspection Duties

The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician shall be further 

  • Timely identification and resolution of faults as part of an emergency maintenance programme;
  • Engage into corrective maintenance through the identification of faults, modifications in equipment & machines (when required);
  • Reporting any modifications made to equipment and machines in such format and manner as directed by the Engineer / Principal Officer in the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Workshop;
  • Interpreting diagrams, schematics and service manuals and assist superiors in troubleshooting faults in complex control systems;
  • Carrying out trouble shooting, periodic maintenance, calibration and repairs on electrical and electronic protection relays;
  • Carrying out trouble shooting, periodic maintenance, calibration and repairs on process measuring instruments;
  • Carrying out trouble shooting, periodic maintenance, calibration and repairs on gas detecting instruments;
  • Installation of trunking and laying of network cables;
  • Carry out trouble shooting, maintenance, repair, adjustments and calibration of other various electronic, audio visual and electro-mechanical equipment including but not limited to Distribution Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs), meters, indicators, gauges, solenoid and motorised actuators, limit switches, DC systems and other related equipment;
  • Use computer software and equipment to test and calibrate certain protection relays;
  • Analyse and interpret data and results from preventive maintenance to repair, adjust, align calibrate and modify circuitry and components;
  • Apply principles and theories of electronic, electrical circuitry, basic engineering mathematics and physics to test Principal equipment and control systems;
  • Operate test apparatus during calibration or test cycles to produce, and record effects of actual or simulated conditions such as vibration, stress, temperature, pressure, flow and other process values;
  • Report abnormalities and inform superiors of any corrective measures to be taken before implementing them.

Electronic Repairs and Maintenance

  • Carry out routine maintenance and repair of all electronic, associated equipment and fire systems including portable instrumentation and communication systems;
  • Perform preventive maintenance on the control systems, panels and record the acquired results;
  • Carry out various maintenance and repair duties on electronic equipment and measuring instruments from other sections / entities for repair and calibration;
  • Repair and replace all electronic components;
  • Design and fabricate simple electronic equipment, control panels, fixtures and test devices;
  • Carry out maintenance and repair work on PABXs and telephone sets;
  • Carry out maintenance and repair work associated with Computer Equipment and Peripherals as required.
  • Ensuring that all maintenance and repairs are aligned to safety requirements for an explosive environment.

Installation, Development & Overhaul Work

  • Perform inspections, repairs and replacement of parts as well as adjustments on the main generation equipment including but not limited to Steam Turbines, Gas Turbines, Generators, Boilers, Diesel engines/compressors and their associated auxiliary equipment;
  • Inspect, design and install new systems ensuring conformance to specifications, drawings and regulations;
  • Install and prepare for the commissioning of new control monitoring or protection system modules, according to the specified installation procedure of the equipment;
  • Lays out, builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs and modifies developmental and production electronic components;
  • Installation of extra low voltage systems such as telephone and network system including but not limited to trunking installation, laying of necessary cables and terminations;
  • Carry out overhauls of different types of electronic equipment;
  • Carry out overhauls on plant auxiliaries and other major equipment containing electronic components, equipment and parts.


Pneumatic Maintenance and Repair Work

The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician shall be multi-tasked and shall be required to carry out maintenance and repair work associated with Pneumatic Equipment. The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician will be required to:

  • Carry out maintenance, repair, testing and calibration of all control equipment and instrumentation in different loops in an effort to reduce downtime;
  • Trouble shoot faults in pneumatic equipment during any operation including transmitter equalizing, testing of controllers and setting positioners mainly to restore loop back to automatic control;
  • Carry out regular maintenance on Pneumatic control equipment including;
  • Maintaining and repairing of process control valves, controllers and associated circuitry;
  • Replacing of gas regulators;
  • Replacement of Silica gel in transformers and other equipment;
  • Replacement, testing and repairing of flowmeters;
  • Maintaining and repairing differential pressure and temperature gauges;
  • Maintaining and repairing tapping points sensing lines, pressure and temperature gauges;
  • Maintaining and repairing solenoid valves and deluge valves on Fire Systems.
  • Routing of sensing lines in commissioning of new projects or alteration of existing projects;
  • Participate and carry out all work associated in the dismantling from place and the overhaul of Pneumatic Equipment;

Monitoring Duties

  • The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician may be required to:
  • o Resolve technical problems associated with their trade that may arise in the process;
  • Inspect, examine and test installed systems;
  • Identifying materials required to be used on maintenance jobs;
  • Carry out any stock take or reconciliations on all stock components used by the Electronics Section;
  • Prepare reports on specific incidents or jobs completed;
  • Ensure that the tools and equipment used by this section are maintained appropriately;
  • Request to superiors any relevant spare parts and consumable items to be issued from stores.
  • Carry the required material and spares to site.

Skill Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • The Power Plant Control & Instrumentation Technician must:
  • Be in possession of a Diploma in Electronic Engineering or equivalent MQF 4 qualification, related to IESC trade, which the management of IESC approves; AND
  • Have five (5) years work experience in the maintenance, repair of instrumentation and control systems; OR
  • Have two (2) years work experience in a power plant or in the oil and gas industry; OR
  • Have successfully completed an apprenticeship of a minimum of one (1) year with IESC.
  • The person carrying out the mentioned tasks above shall have a valid Atex accredited qualification or else until the certification is obtained, work carried out in an Atex environment shall only be carried out under supervision of a person having a valid accredited certificate. The selected candidate shall mandatorily obtain the Atex accredited qualification within his/her probationary period whereby expenses related to this qualification will be paid by the Company.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Good Leadership Skills;
  • Highly organised and meticulous in his work with an eye for detail;
  • Capable of self managing jobs involving multiple tasks and skills;
  • Knowledgeable and well informed of relevant health and safety legislation;
  • Highly experienced and knowledgeable in the installation, maintenance and repair of control systems at a component level;
  • Knowledgeable and experience in the maintenance and repair of instrumentation/Pneumatics;
  • Knowledge and experienced in carrying out basic maintenance and repair of electrical systems;
  • Knowledge of basic quality control and inspection methods;
  • Must be medically fit for work;
  • Must not be afraid to work at heights.
  • Knowledgeable of relevant Health & Safety legislation with Atex installations;
  • Knowledge of Atex installations, maintenance and testing;
  • The person carrying out the mentioned tasks above shall have a valid.

Atex accredited qualification or else until the certification is obtained, work carried out in an Atex environment shall only be carried out under supervision of a person having a valid accredited certificate. The selected candidate shall mandatorily obtain the Atex accredited qualification within his/her probationary period whereby expenses related to this qualification will be paid by the Company.
